How to get Indiana Jones and the Emperor’s Tomb running today

  1. For widescreen and higher resolutions, install the WSGF widescreen mods as described on PCGamingWiki.
  2. For an Xbox-style controller, use the XInput controller fix linked from PCGamingWiki.
  3. Keep the default 30 FPS cap: raising it in vars.cfg can break the Ceylon level and make the game impossible to finish (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

A third-person action adventure set in 1935, a prequel to Temple of Doom, in which Indiana Jones races rival agents across Ceylon, Prague, Istanbul and China for an artifact tied to the first emperor. Play mixes brawling with fists, guns and found objects, whip swings, ledge climbing, jumping puzzles and a few on-rails shooting scenes.

Reception

Critics in 2003 liked the movie-style fistfights and the way the game captured the films, but faulted twitchy controls, technical problems and the save system; the PC version holds a Metascore of 73. Recent player reviews are largely positive about the adventure and the brawling. The same reviews keep coming back to imprecise movement, instant-death drops, checkpoints that force long replays and occasional crashes. A 2022 retrospective found it more cinematic than The Infernal Machine but slow to start.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
A single-player game with no servers or cut content (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
The game is 4:3 only; widescreen, ultrawide and 4K need the WSGF fan mods (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
Full controller support with remapping exists, but XInput pads need a community fix (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists fixes for its known display issues, though some players report crashes at level ends or when alt-tabbing (PCGamingWiki, Steam Community, Steam Community).

  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Indy's broad movements make ledge jumps and rope swings hard to judge, and swimming needs a held key on top of movement. On PC the second analog stick goes unused and Xbox-style pads need a community fix. Source: theglobeandmail.com, forceforgood.co.uk, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The game runs at 4:3 without fan mods, menus respond only to the arrow keys with no mouse, and full-motion videos may not display properly. Source: gamingnexus.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
There is no manual save: progress is stored only after finishing a section, so a death or a single missed jump late in a level means replaying a long stretch. Source: theglobeandmail.com, gamingnexus.com, forceforgood.co.uk.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Small icons appear when the whip, the machete or a specific item is needed, so goals are well signposted, though the game opens with no real introduction and its Ceylon prologue is long and tricky. Source: forceforgood.co.uk, gamingnexus.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
The opening Ceylon levels run long, fiddly sections force long repeats, and a 2026 player review finds the heavy combat turns tedious. Source: forceforgood.co.uk, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The camera misbehaves most during close combat, and players today still wrestle with it in tight corridors; walls turn transparent up close, but the view can still end up facing away from the action. Source: forceforgood.co.uk, theglobeandmail.com, steamcommunity.com.
