How to get Star Wars: Republic Commando running today
- Install the fan-made Republic Commando Fix by copying its files into the game's GameData\System folder; it adds widescreen and 4K support, a field-of-view slider, an optional frame cap and fixes crashes with bump mapping on modern graphics cards.
- In the game options, set the frame rate limit to 30 or 60 to avoid overly fast mouse movement in menus and helmet shake.
- If Steam reports that it cannot be detected, set SWRepublicCommando.exe to Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode, as described on PCGamingWiki.
Synopsis
A squad-based first-person shooter set during the Clone Wars, in which you lead Delta Squad, a team of four elite clone commandos, through three missions behind enemy lines. Besides shooting droids and alien soldiers, you order your squadmates with one button to take cover positions, breach doors, slice terminals or heal you.
What people say
Critics in 2005 liked its darker, military take on Star Wars, its strong audio and the feeling of leading a real squad, while faulting a short, linear campaign, simple squad commands, moments of repetition and forgettable multiplayer. Players today still regard it as one of the best Star Wars shooters, praising the squad banter, the AI teammates and its atmosphere, and many ask for a sequel. On a modern PC it needs fixes for widescreen, crashes on some graphics cards and very high mouse sensitivity at high frame rates.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

Design today: 3.5 / 5
- ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardMouse and keyboard shooting and one-button squad orders work well, though there is no proper controller support on PC and the mouse needs tuning. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- ✗Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe unmodded game lacks proper widescreen support and stretches its HUD on modern screens, which only fan fixes correct. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressProgress is saved at frequent checkpoints, and no common complaint about lost progress was found; evidence on this point is thin. Source: steamcommunity.com.
- ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe opening mission introduces squad orders through context prompts and critics describe the commands as simple, so no guide is needed. Source: metacritic.com.
- ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe campaign is short and linear with no grinding, though some critics found stretches repetitive. Source: metacritic.com.
- ✗Camera and movement never fight the playerWithout fan fixes the field of view is fixed and narrow on widescreen, and high frame rates cause helmet shake and erratic mouse speed. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
