Synopsis

A fantasy strategy game that mixes a turn-based campaign map with real-time battles. Players lead one of eight faiths across the land of Urak, recruiting champions and armies, managing towns and resources, exploring dungeons and finally confronting the death lord Balkoth. The Special Edition adds the Legends of Urak expansion with new units, buildings, campaigns and a lord editor.

Reception

Reviews in 1997 were mixed to positive: critics liked its ambitious blend of empire building, role-playing heroes and tactical real-time combat, but named launch bugs, erratic pathfinding, a steep learning curve and awkward building management. A 2022 retrospective still recommends it as a successful genre mashup while noting dragging battles and combat that the game barely explains. On Steam it is Very Positive, mostly from players returning to a childhood favorite who praise the music and depth but admit it has many rough edges.

  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Mouse commands in battle are simple, but units hidden behind buildings cannot be selected and pathfinding is erratic, so orders often go astray; there is no controller support. Source: gamesfirst.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The only resolution is 640×480, so the interface fills a modern screen as a heavily stretched or boxed low-resolution image. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Saves go into an old-style savegame folder inside the game directory with no evident limit on the number of files, and both the 1997 review and returning players give saving often as their top tip. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, gamesfirst.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
The game explains little of its combat or economy in play, and both 1997 and 2022 reviews say new players lose repeatedly without studying the roughly 100-page manual. Source: superjumpmagazine.com, gamesfirst.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Seven rival factions take their turns in sequence, resources are scarce, and battles grow long enough that players fall back on automatic resolution. Source: superjumpmagazine.com, gamesfirst.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
On the tactical maps, impassable terrain is hard to read and unit pathfinding is unreliable, so troops get stuck or take odd routes. Source: gamesfirst.com.
