How to get Max Payne running today

What you need

Required ThirteenAG's Max Payne Widescreen FixCorrects the widescreen aspect ratio, HUD, field of view and video scaling, and adds options such as mouse smoothing off and a VSync toggle. No mod manager is needed for this guide.
Optional Max Payne Series Startup Hang PatchStops the game from locking up during startup, which PCGamingWiki recommends applying.
Optional MOGGA patch for Max PayneAn alternative to the Widescreen Fix that adds a Vulkan renderer, high frame rate fixes, raw mouse input and sound fixes; use one or the other.

Steps

Install the Widescreen Fix.
1. Download MaxPayne.WidescreenFix.zip from the release page.
2. In Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files.
3. Extract the archive into that folder, beside the game executable, and keep the folders in the archive.
4. Open scripts\MaxPayne.WidescreenFix.ini with a text editor to change options such as the FOV multiplier, cutscene borders and mouse smoothing.
5. Leave the FOV close to the default if the nightmare levels become hard to play.
6. If an exclamation mark stays on screen in cutscenes, turn on cutscene borders in the same file.
7. Save the file and start the game.
Fix startup hangs and the launcher with the Startup Hang Patch.
1. Download the patch and follow the install notes on its page.
2. If the launcher still does not start, right-click the game executable in the game folder and choose Properties.
3. On the Compatibility tab, tick Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose Windows 98 / Me.
4. Click Apply and start the game again.
5. To skip the launcher, add -nodialog to the game's launch options in Steam.
As an alternative, install the MOGGA patch instead of the Widescreen Fix.
1. Open the MOGGA page and use its Downloads section.
2. Install it with the MOGGA app for Windows, or download the patch archive by hand.
3. Do not combine it with the Widescreen Fix.
4. Start the game through the new launcher it adds.
5. Pick the frame rate limit, V-Sync mode and Mouse DPI in the launcher's MOGGA options.
6. Set Mouse DPI to the DPI your mouse actually uses.
