How to get Spec Ops: The Line running today

  1. Cap the frame rate at 60 (or turn on V-Sync at 60 Hz); at higher frame rates the helicopter sequence is almost impossible to pass.
  2. If the game crashes or runs poorly, install Nvidia PhysX, verify the game files in Steam and delete the SpecOps-TheLine settings folder (saves are kept).
  3. If the screen is white or black at launch, add -windowed to the Steam launch options.

Synopsis

A third-person military shooter in which a three-man Delta Force squad enters a sand-buried Dubai to find a missing US battalion. You move from cover to cover, give simple orders to two squadmates and face hard choices as the mission turns darker and the line between right and wrong blurs.

What people say

Critics in 2012 were split between its story and its play: the writing and its critique of military shooters were widely praised, while the combat was called an ordinary cover shooter with a clumsy cover system. Retrospectives still treat it as a landmark for storytelling in games. Players today often say the story is worth seeing but the shooting feels flat and repetitive. It was delisted from Steam and GOG in January 2024, so only existing owners can download it.
