How to get Myst IV: Revelation running today
- Install Myst IV: Revolution to re-encode the game images and remove the pause on every screen change; it supports the Steam release.
- If the game loads to a black screen or will not start on Windows 11, unplug extra USB devices such as headsets, or place the IndirectInput DirectInput wrapper in the game's bin folder, as listed on PCGamingWiki.

Reception
Critics rated it highly at release, praising its lush visuals, Jack Wall's score and the scale of its puzzles, while noting slow scene transitions and timed puzzles. Steam player reviews are now mixed. Players still admire the art and music but call several puzzles unreasonable, report a jumpy hand cursor and say they turned to a walkthrough.

Design today
1.5/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardPlay uses an animated hand cursor over small hotspots. Steam players from 2020 to 2025 report the cursor jumping, which can make some puzzles nearly impossible until the mouse polling rate is lowered, and say the hand barely changes over interactive spots. The 2004 UHS review liked the cursor. There is no controller support or key remapping. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThe game is built for 4:3; other aspect ratios crop the top and bottom of the image, and widescreen or 4K needs a third-party resolution changer. The Zip Mode travel thumbnails are too small to make out. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, uhs-hints.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThe game can be saved at any time from the main menu, with no checkpoint limits, though saving and loading can take up to a minute. Source: uhs-hints.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guidePlayers in a 2024 to 2025 thread call the puzzles unreasonable and admit relying on walkthroughs. The built-in three-level hint system covers only the most common puzzles. Source: steamcommunity.com, uhs-hints.com.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingSeveral puzzles require long backtracking across sprawling Ages, and timed puzzles can take dozens of attempts. Players still call these stretches tedious. Source: steamcommunity.com, uhs-hints.com.
- Camera or movement fights the playerMovement jumps between fixed viewpoints with a pause of 5 to 20 seconds at each scene change unless the images are re-encoded with a fan tool. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, uhs-hints.com.
