Synopsis

Persona 3 Portable is a Japanese role-playing game that splits each day between life at a Japanese high school and battles during a hidden Dark Hour at midnight. Players balance classes, exams and friendships that strengthen their Personas, then climb the shifting tower Tartarus in turn-based fights against creatures called Shadows. A male or female protagonist can be chosen, and each has different friendships and story scenes.

This is the 2023 remaster of the 2009 PSP version, which adds a female protagonist route but trades the PS2 original's 3D town and anime cutscenes for menus and still art.

Reception

Critics welcomed the 2023 PC release, praising its dark tone, writing and the change that lets players command the whole party in battle. Many also noted its age, from the repetitive Tartarus floors to the visual novel style scenes that replace the PS2 version's 3D town and animated cutscenes. Steam players love the story and the female route, but many call the port lazy, citing compressed battle audio, rough upscaled art and no fast-forward option. The added quick save and adjustable difficulty were welcomed.

16:9 and 4K are supported natively, while ultrawide is pillarboxed (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Full controller support and remappable keyboard and controller layouts are included, though the town map's sliding cursor is fiddly with a mouse. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, pcgamer.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Many backgrounds and portraits are rough AI upscales of the PSP art, scenes pan over low-resolution images, and the menus are awkward to browse on PC. Source: pcgamer.com, playday.one, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Manual saves are available at several fixed spots, and a quick save from the menu works almost anywhere, though that quick save is erased once it is loaded. Source: thegamer.com, playday.one.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The story introduces school life, Tartarus, fusion and social links one at a time, and difficulty can be changed at any point, though some social links have stat locks and deadlines that are easy to miss. Source: playday.one, thegamer.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Nights spent climbing the plain, repetitive floors of Tartarus drag between story beats, a dungeon far less varied than those of later Persona games. Source: pcgamer.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Outside the dungeon, locations are picked from a 2D map instead of walked, and Tartarus uses a simple third-person view that rarely gets in the way. Source: thegamer.com, pcgamer.com.
