Synopsis

This 2008 reboot of Prince of Persia follows a wandering adventurer who teams up with Elika, a princess with magic powers, to stop a dark god from spreading corruption across her land. Players run along walls, leap between ledges and fight one-on-one battles in a cel-shaded open world, healing each region and gathering light seeds to unlock new powers and paths.

Reception

Critics admired the painterly cel-shaded art, the fluid acrobatics and the bond between the two leads, but many felt the game was far too easy because Elika rescues the player from every fall and defeat. Reviewers also criticized the thin combat and the need to retrace cleansed areas to collect light seeds. Steam players rate it Mostly Positive today, often praising the art and music that still hold up, while recent reviews call the structure repetitive and the challenge almost absent.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game is single player only and nothing has been removed from the PC release (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen and ultrawide resolutions are supported, and 4K can be set through the registry (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
XInput controllers work in game, though the launcher needs a mouse and the layout cannot be remapped (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Freezing when starting a new game on Windows 10 and later is fixed with a community patch, and the remaining open issues only concern the Steam overlay and the Steam Controller (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Acrobatics rely on simple timed presses of a few buttons, and the game supports XInput controllers as well as remappable mouse and keyboard controls. Source: denofgeek.com, gamerevolution.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The screen shows almost no interface beyond button prompts, and the game supports widescreen and ultrawide resolutions out of the box. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
The player cannot die: Elika catches every failed jump or lost fight and returns the Prince to the last solid ground, so no progress is lost. Source: denofgeek.com, gamerevolution.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The game guides the player constantly: tutorials show button prompts as each move arrives, and in platforming the next route is always marked, so it rarely leaves anyone stuck. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, wurb.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Reaching new areas requires gathering light seeds in regions already cleansed, which forces players back over the same paths, and players widely describe the structure as repetitive. Source: gamerevolution.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The camera frames the acrobatics on its own; a most-helpful Steam review calls it mostly appropriate, and no recent Steam review complains about it. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
