How to get Runaway: A Road Adventure running today

  1. If colors look broken or the screen turns black and white on Windows 11, copy the DLL files from the MS\x86 folder of dgVoodoo2 into the game folder and choose the dgVoodoo graphics adapter in the game's setup (Steam discussion).
  2. Alternatively, set the in-game video quality to Low and run the game in Windows 7 compatibility mode (Steam discussion).

Synopsis

Runaway is a cartoon-style point and click adventure from Pendulo Studios. Brian Basco, a student about to leave for Berkeley, takes in a nightclub dancer who witnessed a murder and ends up on the run from the mob across the United States. Play means talking to people, collecting items and combining them to solve puzzles.

Reception

Critics at release liked the hand-drawn backgrounds, smooth animation and light humor, and it holds a Metascore of 74. Reviews also flagged harsh pixel hunts and a few puzzles with loose logic, though later chapters give clearer goals. On Steam it is Mostly Positive, with players praising the art and story while many say they needed a walkthrough to find tiny hotspots and guess odd item uses.

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Everything is done with the mouse: left click for the main action, right click for other actions, and a standard inventory. Source: uhs-hints.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The game runs only at 1024×768 with no widescreen or windowed mode, so it is stretched or boxed on modern screens. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
The hero cannot die and there are no timed sequences, and players can go back to an earlier save to retry a step. Source: gameboomers.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Hotspots are tiny and crowded and some solutions follow loose logic, and many players report needing a walkthrough to progress. Source: cubed3.com, uhs-hints.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Brian refuses to pick up items until he knows he needs them, which forces repeated trips back through earlier scenes, and players today still note puzzles that make them repeat the same steps. Source: cubed3.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Play takes place on hand-drawn cartoon screens with no camera to manage, and Brian walks wherever the player clicks. Source: lysator.liu.se, cubed3.com.
