How to get Sacred Gold running today
- If the game freezes at the loading screen while loading fonts, run Config.exe in the game folder and force 32-bit color depth, as described on PCGamingWiki.
- For widescreen resolutions and a correctly scaled interface, install one of the community resolution patches (PureHD or Sacred NL) listed under High-resolution rendering on PCGamingWiki.
- To restore 3D audio effects, copy dsound.dll and dsound.ini from IndirectSound into the game folder.
- The Windows key minimizes and freezes the game; an AutoHotkey script that blocks the key avoids this, per PCGamingWiki.
Synopsis
An isometric action role-playing game set in the large open fantasy kingdom of Ancaria, where you pick one of several heroes and fight hordes of monsters in real time. Sacred Gold bundles the original game with the Sacred Plus additions and the Underworld expansion, which adds two heroes and a separate campaign. You follow a main quest, take on side quests in every town, collect loot and ride horses across a seamless world.
Reception
Critics in 2004 liked the huge seamless world, the loot and the distinct heroes, giving it a PC Metascore of 74 from 37 reviews, but faulted its bugs, patchy pathfinding and repetitive play. Players today rate Sacred Gold Very Positive on Steam, with 85 percent of about 4,200 reviews positive, and many top reviews share the Config.exe settings needed to get it running on modern Windows; a 2019 playthrough blog and recent players find the side quests and fights repetitive.

- No full controller support and no remappable controlsThere is no controller support and keys cannot be remapped (PCGamingWiki).
- Steam Deck Verified or Playable
- No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account

Design today
2.5/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardKeys cannot be remapped, there is no controller support and no mouse sensitivity setting, and click-to-move pathfinding often leaves the hero stuck, especially on horseback. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, worthplaying.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThe game runs at 1024×768 by default and offers no native widescreen resolutions; widescreen and an interface that scales correctly need community patches. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThe game can be saved freely and reloaded at the saved spot, and death costs little beyond a long trip back from a fixed respawn point, which a nearby save avoids. Source: steamcommunity.com, randombattlesblog.wordpress.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressQuest givers in each town hand out plain kill, escort and fetch tasks, and the main quest leads the hero from region to region, so progress does not depend on a guide. Source: randombattlesblog.wordpress.com.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingSide quests repeat the same kill, fetch and escort patterns, areas refill with respawning enemies, and dying sends the hero to a respawn point that can be far across the map. Source: randombattlesblog.wordpress.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Camera or movement fights the playerIn crowded fights it is hard to pick out a single enemy from the fixed isometric view without zooming in, which a launch review found awkward mid battle; a later patch let the view zoom out much farther. Source: worthplaying.com, steamcommunity.com.
