How to get Silent Hill Homecoming running today

  1. Install Unknownproject's patch: run Version 3.10 All-In-One, then the latest 3.xx release from the patch releases page, and copy the files into the game folder if they land in a subfolder (PCGamingWiki).
  2. The patch unlocks 60 FPS and above, fixes the map and inventory views in widescreen, reworks quick time events and fixes Alt+Tab and loading screen crashes (PCGamingWiki).
  3. Without the patch, keep the resolution at 1920×1080 or lower, since higher resolutions can crash the game in areas such as the Shepherd house (PCGamingWiki).
  4. To use a controller, select it in the game's controller settings before playing, since it is not enabled by default (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

Silent Hill Homecoming is a third person survival horror game in which soldier Alex Shepherd returns to his foggy hometown of Shepherd's Glen to search for his missing younger brother. The search leads into the nearby town of Silent Hill and its nightmarish Otherworld, where Alex fights monsters in close combat, scrapes together scarce ammunition and solves key, code and sliding puzzles.

Reception

Critics at release gave it middling scores, praising the atmosphere, the sound and the freely controlled camera while faulting the action-heavy combat, an unreliable dodge, sparse save points and excessive backtracking; the PC version holds a Metascore of 64. Some reviewers found the PC port functional with mouse and keyboard, but its 30 FPS cap and broken widescreen elements are now patched only by fans. On Steam the game sits at a Mixed rating of about 47 percent, and it is not sold in many regions.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game is single player and nothing was removed, though Steam does not sell it in many regions (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen works natively, but the map and examined items need a fan patch, and ultrawide and 4K are only hackable (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
XInput, DualShock 4 and DirectInput controllers work once enabled in the options, with generic button prompts unless patched (PCGamingWiki).
  • ?Not confirmed yetSteam Deck Verified or Playable
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Crashes on Alt+Tab, at resolutions above 1080p and on some loading screens all have documented workarounds or a fan patch fix (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

1.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Combat rests on a single dodge that often fails to avoid attacks, and reviewers called the controls clunky and sluggish, though the PC version works acceptably with mouse and keyboard; a controller works only after switching it on in the settings menu. Source: gameinformer.com, denofgeek.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The unpatched game is locked to 30 FPS, has no windowed mode option, and crops the map and examined items in widescreen until a fan patch fixes them. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
Progress saves only at rare red save points on walls, spaced far enough apart that a death can cost a long stretch of play. Source: gameinformer.com, denofgeek.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Many puzzles call for random experimentation, and the very dark environments make it easy to miss a door or switch needed to progress. Source: gameinformer.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Tasks are split into long chains of errands, and frequent locked or broken doors force backtracking through areas without shortcuts. Source: gameinformer.com, bit-tech.net, denofgeek.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The camera is fully player controlled instead of the fixed angles of earlier entries, and a review found this made exploring smoother and more enjoyable. Source: denofgeek.com.
