How to get Sonic Generations running today
- If the game stutters on Windows 11, use the Direct3D 11 replacement renderer or DXVK described on PCGamingWiki: Sonic Generations.
- Keep the frame rate at 60 fps; higher rates can break stages.
- If it crashes at launch, set the audio device to 24-bit 48 kHz, run the game as administrator and make sure .NET Framework 4 is installed.
- Ranked mode can crash on accounts with more than 100 Steam friends; avoid it if that happens.
Synopsis
A 20th-anniversary Sonic platformer in which Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic team up after a time-warping creature scatters their friends. Each stage is a reimagined level from the series' history, played once as a side-scrolling 2D act and once as a fast 3D act, with optional challenge acts unlocked from a hub world.
What people say
Critics in 2011 called it the best Sonic game in years, praising the remixed stages, the music and the blend of 2D and 3D play. Several reviewers felt the later stages and the bosses were weaker and more frustrating than the opening. Steam players today still enjoy the speed and level design but complain about Classic Sonic's floaty physics, a camera that loses track of Modern Sonic, dull bosses and repetitive challenge acts. On PC, controller quirks, crashes and stutter come up often.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

Design today: 2.5 / 5
- ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardPlayers often call Classic Sonic's physics floaty and the homing attack unreliable, and keyboard players can only bind keys through a virtual Xbox 360 pad, with some keys left unbindable. Source: vaporlens.app, pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensFew complaints about menus or text turned up, and the hub and stage menus are simple, though the evidence here is thin. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressStages are short and progress is kept between acts, with Steam Cloud support; no players complained about lost progress, but the evidence is thin. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✗It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressPlayers say the boss fights are poorly explained, which leads to trial and error. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✗Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingBoss fights are locked behind challenge acts that many players find repetitive and tedious, which pads a short campaign. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✗Camera and movement never fight the playerA common complaint is that Modern Sonic's camera at high speed makes it hard to see what is ahead. Source: vaporlens.app.
