Synopsis

Telltale's five-episode return to the Monkey Island series follows the pirate Guybrush Threepwood after a botched voodoo ritual spreads a pox across the Caribbean. You explore islands in 3D, collect and combine items, talk your way through branching conversations and solve inventory puzzles, with each episode telling one chapter of a single story.

Reception

Critics at release liked the writing, the returning voice cast and the mostly logical puzzles, with the first chapter scoring 79 on Metacritic, though they found the earlier episodes uneven and the movement controls clumsy. RPGFan called the second chapter the weakest because of its sailing back and forth. Players today often rank it among the better entries in the series for its humor and darker finale. Common complaints are the keyboard-or-drag movement, generic 3D art and short individual episodes.

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Guybrush has to be walked with the keyboard or by clicking and dragging with the mouse, and reviewers at release and players today call both methods clumsy and fiddly. Source: rpgfan.com, gameboomers.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The game supports 16:9 resolutions up to 4K with separate volume sliders and subtitles, though ultrawide screens are not supported. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Saves can be made at any time with plenty of slots, and the save menu shows a short plot summary for each save. Source: gameboomers.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A built-in hint system is there, though GameBoomers found it only occasionally helpful, and RPGFan found most puzzles logical enough that a walkthrough is rarely tempting. Source: rpgfan.com, gameboomers.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
The first chapter has a long jungle maze and the second chapter sends Guybrush sailing back and forth between islands, and the finale repeatedly moves him to new locations mid-puzzle. Source: rpgfan.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The cinematic third-person view leaves Guybrush bumping into scenery, and GameBoomers says keyboard movement still needs constant readjusting because of it. Source: gameboomers.com, rpgfan.com.
