How to get American Conquest running today

  1. Right-click DMCR.exe in the game's install folder, open Properties and go to the Compatibility tab (Steam Community).
  2. Turn on compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3), set reduced color mode to 8-bit (256 colors) and override high DPI scaling so the application handles it (Steam Community).
  3. In the game's settings, choose Slow Mode, lower the game speed by about 10 percent and pick your screen resolution (PCGamingWiki).
  4. If matches freeze right after loading, run the registry file named cossacks in the game folder once and restart the PC (Steam Community).

Synopsis

American Conquest is a real-time strategy game from the makers of Cossacks, covering three centuries of colonial wars in the Americas from Columbus to the War of Independence. Players train peasants into soldiers, gather resources and command huge armies, with up to 16,000 units on a map. It offers eight campaigns with 42 missions, single scenarios, random maps and a mission editor.

Reception

Critics at release praised the sheer scale of the battles, the varied mission designs, the detailed animation and the historical narration. They also pointed to poor pathfinding, units that fail to fight back on their own, friendly fire and a learning curve less intuitive than the best RTS games. Steam players still recall it as a favorite from childhood, but reviews are mixed, and many of them are guides to getting it running at the right speed on modern Windows.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game's own online registration and lobby no longer work, so players arrange online matches through the third-party GameRanger service or a 2026 community remaster with a new server; LAN play remains (Steam Community, Steam Community).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
    Widescreen resolutions are supported (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
There is no controller support and keys cannot be remapped (PCGamingWiki).
  • Not Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
The Steam version runs on Windows 11 with compatibility settings, though without them it can run too fast, show broken colors or freeze when a match starts (Steam Community).

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Units often fail to attack nearby enemies on their own, and large armies get stuck on terrain objects or wander off along odd paths. Keys cannot be remapped. Source: worthplaying.com, eurogamer.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The fixed 2002 interface has no windowed mode or scaling, and the Steam version needs an 8-bit color compatibility setting before it displays correctly on modern Windows. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Missions can be saved manually into the game's Save folder, and the game also writes autosaves, so a mission does not have to be finished in one sitting. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The first missions of the main campaign work as a tutorial for the game's mechanics, and each mission opens with a spoken briefing. Source: eurogamer.net.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Missions vary between building a base, fighting with a fixed army, raiding villages and meeting resource or population targets, so the campaigns rarely repeat themselves. Source: eurogamer.net, worthplaying.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The close view is restrictive with large armies and big buildings hide units behind them, so players must keep switching to the zoomed-out view, which causes a short pause each time. Source: worthplaying.com, eurogamer.net.
