Synopsis

A party-based fantasy role-playing game built on Dungeons & Dragons rules. After escaping a mage's dungeon, you gather companions, explore the city of Athkatla and beyond, and fight in real time with the option to pause and give orders.

What people say

The original is widely ranked among the best RPGs ever made, and critics reviewing this edition still praised its writing, companions and sheer size. The same reviews noted that it is a product of its time: hard, obtuse for newcomers and carrying some bugs, with additions that did not impress everyone. Players today mostly agree the story and characters hold up, while the rules-heavy combat and layered menus take patience. It suits players willing to learn old-school systems.

Design today

3 / 5
  • ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard

Point-and-click commands with a pause key work well on mouse and keyboard, and an optional turn-based style helps slower players. There is no built-in controller support. Source: articles.retroware.com, pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✗Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens

Layers of menus for leveling, gear, spells and the journal demand a lot of micromanagement, a common complaint about this edition too. Source: articles.retroware.com.

  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress

You can save anywhere outside combat, which matters because the game is tough and full of sudden deaths. Steam Cloud syncs the saves. Source: articles.retroware.com, pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✗Hard to make progress without a guide

Critics call it hard and obtuse, and the old Dungeons & Dragons rules and save-or-die traps leave newcomers reaching for guides. Source: opencritic.com, articles.retroware.com.

  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking

Side quests are plentiful and varied, and the main story keeps moving between chapters without forced filler. Source: articles.retroware.com.

  • ✗Camera or movement fights the player

The fixed isometric view keeps you at a distance, and party pathfinding in tight spaces is a long-standing complaint about the engine. The frame rate is capped at 30. Source: articles.retroware.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
