Synopsis
Icewind Dale is a Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game in which you build a party of six adventurers and lead them through the frozen north of the Forgotten Realms. Fighting is real-time with pause, and the game is built around a long chain of dungeons and tactical battles rather than conversation and exploration.
What people say
Reviewers of the 2014 Enhanced Edition welcomed the interface improvements, new classes and kits, and its stability, while noting it adds less new content than Beamdog's Baldur's Gate remakes and that the story is thin. Players today praise the classic AD&D rules and the challenging party combat. The most common complaints are poor pathfinding, a steep learning curve that sends many to wikis, fiddly fights and a slow first few hours.

Design today
3 / 5✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Point-and-click party control with pause works well with a mouse, and players say the default Steam Deck controller layout works too. Source: vaporlens.app.
✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The Enhanced Edition adds widescreen support, a text-size slider and a clickable quest journal, though the hotkey bar stays cramped. Source: vaporlens.app.
✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Unlimited manual saves and four rotating quicksaves at any time outside combat. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
✗Hard to make progress without a guide
The AD&D rules are barely explained, and players commonly report needing wikis to build a party and understand the mechanics. Source: vaporlens.app.
✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
A long chain of combat-heavy dungeons with little story between them, and players call the early hours slow. Source: vaporlens.app.
✗Camera or movement fights the player
