Synopsis

A party-based fantasy role-playing game built on the second edition Dungeons & Dragons rules. You create a hero, gather companions and explore the Sword Coast in real-time combat that you can pause at any moment to give orders, while a mystery about your own origins unfolds. This edition includes the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion and new side content.

What people say

Critics at release of the Enhanced Edition welcomed the widescreen support and the new companions, which fit the original well, but noted that most of the many bug fixes were invisible and the visuals still felt old. The strict rule set, sudden party deaths and the need to save constantly were seen as dated even then. Players today still praise the freedom to explore and the memorable companions, while pointing to poor pathfinding, a punishing early game and many empty wilderness maps.

  • ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardPoint-and-click party control with a pause key works well with mouse and keyboard. Small HUD buttons are hard to hit without a stylus on touch screens. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, klardendum.com.
  • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe interface scales to high resolutions up to 4K and adds a quest journal and a quick-loot panel. Reviewers saw only minor font glitches when scaled. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, klardendum.com.
  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressSaving is free: unlimited manual saves, four quicksave slots and optional cloud saves. Sudden party deaths mean you will use them often. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, engadget.com.
  • ✗Hard to make progress without a guideThe tutorial covers only the basics, and the dense tabletop rules and unbalanced classes leave new players guessing. Source: engadget.com, klardendum.com.
  • ✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingMany wilderness maps are large but nearly empty, and parts of the expansion questline drag. Source: klardendum.com.
  • ✗Camera or movement fights the playerParty pathfinding is poor, especially in tight dungeon corridors, and the engine is capped at 30 frames per second. Source: klardendum.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
