How to get Black Mirror II running today

  1. If the game crashes when leaving the underground shelter or escaping the museum at night, press Alt+Tab just before the crash point and then switch back, a workaround reported in this Steam thread.
  2. For readable text at 1440p or 4K, use the community 4K and bigger fonts patch linked on PCGamingWiki, then reset the language in Documents\blackmirror\config.xml if it changes.

Synopsis

Black Mirror II, also sold as Black Mirror II: Reigning Evil, is a third-person point-and-click horror adventure from Cranberry Production. College student Darren Michaels starts in a small town in Maine and is drawn to the English village of Willow Creek and the cursed Gordon family, solving inventory puzzles, logic minigames and conversations as he uncovers his own ties to the castle.

Reception

German reviewers in 2009 praised the gloomy atmosphere, detailed backgrounds and generous help options, but found many puzzles very hard and felt the second half and the ending lost track of the story. Recent Steam players are largely positive, calling the puzzles fair and the atmosphere strong, and some rank it above the first game. Common complaints are an unlikable, arrogant hero, a slow opening with filler, scenes packed with objects to examine, and an ending that leaves too much unexplained.

  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game is single player and nothing has been removed from the Steam release (PCGamingWiki).

Widescreen is supported, while 4K needs a config edit and leaves the interface unscaled (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Classic point-and-click mouse controls work well, though the single-button scheme makes the hero comment on objects before using them, and some must be clicked several times. Source: gameswelt.de.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
At 1440p and 4K the interface does not scale, so text becomes tiny unless a fan patch is applied. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Saving is free with unlimited slots, and the few scenes where the hero can die are preceded by an autosave, so little progress is lost. Source: gameboomers.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Hotspots can be shown on screen, a diary tracks open tasks, layered hints are available, and minigames can be skipped, so puzzles rarely need a guide. Source: gameswelt.de, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
The opening in Maine is slow and padded, scenes are crowded with objects to examine, and the second half drifts away from the main story. Source: steamcommunity.com, gameswelt.de.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Scenes use fixed painted backgrounds, a map allows fast travel between locations, and a double-click skips walking and dialogue. Source: gameswelt.de.
