Synopsis

Uprising is a standalone, single-player expansion to Red Alert 3, the tongue-in-cheek real-time strategy game about an alternate Cold War between the Allies, the Soviets and the Empire of the Rising Sun. It offers four short campaigns told through live-action cutscenes, including a squad-based story starring the psychic schoolgirl Yuriko, plus a 50-scenario Commander's Challenge and skirmish battles with new units.

Reception

Critics in 2009 enjoyed the new units, the campy live-action scenes and the Commander's Challenge, but many found the missions unfairly tuned and regretted the missing multiplayer and co-op; it holds a PC Metascore of 64. Several reviews warned that it assumes players already mastered Red Alert 3. Steam players still rate it Very Positive, mostly out of affection for the series. It is no longer sold on its own on Steam.

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The game uses standard real-time strategy mouse and keyboard controls with full key remapping; there is no controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamingnexus.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The interface supports widescreen and 4K resolutions, with unlisted resolutions set through a simple config edit. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
A failed attempt can be reloaded quickly, which the frequent defeats in the harder scenarios make necessary. Source: videogamer.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A well-organized tutorial with filmed instructors walks through the core concepts of Red Alert 3 at a measured pace. Source: gamingnexus.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Without multiplayer balance to respect, many missions are tuned to test patience, with harsh starting conditions and waves of enemies, and the first mission is hard even on easy. Source: videogamer.com, metacritic.com, gamingnexus.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Unit pathfinding is poor and units ignore fights outside a small radius, so groups sent without close supervision get lost or destroyed. Source: gamingnexus.com.
