Synopsis

A real-time strategy game set in an alternate history where the Soviet Union rewrites the past with time travel, setting off a three-way war between the Soviets, the Allies and the new Empire of the Rising Sun. You build bases, gather resources and command land, sea and air units, each with a special ability. Every one of the three nine-mission campaigns is played alongside a co-commander, either an AI partner or a friend online, and the story plays out in campy live-action video scenes.

Reception

Critics in 2008 praised the humor, the inventive factions, the naval combat and the co-op campaign, giving it a PC Metascore of 82, while some saw it as an evolution of the series rather than a leap. Worth Playing noted weak pathfinding and occasional slowdown. Steam no longer sells it separately, only in The Ultimate Collection bundle, and players rate it Very Positive on Steam, with 85 percent of about 15,000 reviews positive, and online play lives on through fan-run servers.

  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The official GameSpy servers have shut down, so online versus and online campaign co-op need fan-run replacement servers, and Steam no longer sells the game on its own, only inside Command & Conquer The Ultimate Collection (PCGamingWiki, Steam).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen and 4K are supported natively (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
There is no controller support on PC (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Single-player has no open crashing issue; online play suffers crash bugs that an open-source tool fixes (PCGamingWiki).

  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Standard mouse-driven strategy controls with fully remappable keys and adjustable scroll speed; there is no controller support on PC. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamesradar.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The game supports widescreen and 4K resolutions natively and subtitles all dialogue. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Campaign missions can be saved at any point, which helps when a mission objective reveals a large hidden enemy force. Source: worthplaying.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A tutorial covers base building, unit production, garrisoning and resource collection, and each campaign introduces its faction step by step. Source: worthplaying.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Each faction has a self-contained campaign of nine missions with frequent twists, and the AI co-commander helps keep battles moving. Source: worthplaying.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The overhead camera scrolls and zooms freely with adjustable speed; the frame rate is locked at 30 FPS, though, with game speed tied to it. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
