How to get Cossacks: European Wars running today

  1. Rename or remove the Video folder inside the game's install folder (PCGamingWiki).
  2. Download cnc-ddraw and extract it into the game's install folder, which replaces the old DirectDraw renderer and fixes the crash at startup, the blank screen and the unusable menu (PCGamingWiki).
  3. Set dmcr.exe to run as administrator (PCGamingWiki).
  4. If the game runs too fast, choose Slow Mode in the settings and lower the game speed by about 10 percent (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

Cossacks: European Wars is a real-time strategy game set in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. Players gather resources, build towns and research a large tech tree for one of 16 nations, then lead armies of up to thousands of soldiers in formation battles. It offers a tutorial, historical campaigns, single missions and skirmish games against the computer.

Reception

Critics in 2001 were impressed by the huge battles, the detailed nations and the depth of the tech tree, though many saw it as close to Age of Empires II and some found the stats and options overwhelming. Eurogamer singled out campaigns that were brutally hard and an enemy AI that sat idle unless scripted. Steam players still remember it fondly as one of the great RTS games of its era, but many reviews and threads are about getting it to start, and some report crashes every few hours on modern systems.

  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The mouse-driven RTS controls cover waypoints, hotkey groups and fire orders, though formations are clumsy to steer and keys cannot be remapped. Source: eurogamer.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
There is no windowed mode, and ActionTrip warned at release that players could get lost in its many stats, units and options, even though Eurogamer found the mouse interface simple. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, metacritic.com, eurogamer.net.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Missions can be saved by hand and the game also autosaves, though saving stops once a couple of hundred save files pile up until old ones are deleted, and one player saw campaign progress reset between sessions. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A full tutorial campaign introduces the basic concepts and the differences from other RTS games before the main campaigns begin. Source: eurogamer.net.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Campaign missions often limit units or give no way to replace losses, and some are nearly impossible without exploiting weaknesses in a passive AI. Source: eurogamer.net.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The fixed overhead view scrolls freely across the map, and large armies move without serious slowdown. Source: eurogamer.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
