How to get Cossacks II: Napoleonic Wars running today
- Install the official 1.2 patch and the official modern graphics card fix listed on PCGamingWiki, which also clears the AGP video memory error at launch.
- Set engine.exe to run as administrator in Windows XP Service Pack 3 compatibility mode, and mark log.txt in the game folder as read-only (Steam Community review).
- If saving fails, create a folder named Save in the game folder (Steam Community review).
Synopsis
A real-time strategy game set in the Napoleonic Wars, where you command armies of thousands of soldiers in formations across large battlefields. Morale, fatigue, terrain and officers decide fights as much as numbers do. A turn-based campaign map for conquering Europe sits on top of the real-time battles, alongside historical battles and skirmish.

Reception
Critics liked its scale, its lack of micromanagement and its period-faithful focus on formations and morale, which earned a Metascore of 73. Common complaints were steep difficulty, a dense learning curve and very long load times. Players still praise skirmish and formations, but Steam reviews sit at Mixed, mostly because the Steam version crashes, freezes or will not start on modern Windows without manual fixes.

3/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardUnits are selected and ordered with the mouse in the usual real-time strategy way, with formations and fire modes set from on-screen buttons, though hotkeys cannot be remapped. Source: worthplaying.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensBattles run at widescreen resolutions, but the main menu is locked to a low resolution, and the starting resolution can change the Windows desktop resolution and refresh rate. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressGames can be saved freely during battles and campaigns, although the Steam version needs a Save folder created by hand before saving works. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guideCritics called the game overwhelming in difficulty and complexity, a fit mainly for hardcore strategy fans. Source: metacritic.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingBattles focus on moving whole formations instead of micromanaging single units, and the campaign alternates turn-based map moves with real-time fights, though loading the game itself can take minutes. - Camera or movement fights the playerA player review bluntly calls the camera poor, and no opened critic review describes it favorably. Source: steamcommunity.com.
