How to get Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers running today

  1. Cap the frame rate at 60 FPS in the graphics driver or with an external limiter, or the slow-motion hit camera freezes whenever a soldier is shot (PCGamingWiki).
  2. If the game will not start on a handheld PC or laptop screen, add -windowed to the Steam launch options; it switches to full screen at the main menu (Steam Community).
  3. For an unstretched widescreen image, install the FOV fix linked from PCGamingWiki.

Synopsis

Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers is a squad tactics game in which the player never aims a rifle directly but commands two US Army fire teams through a fictional Middle Eastern city. Teams are moved from cover to cover, ordered to suppress, flank, throw grenades and clear buildings, and can be split into two-man buddy teams. This sequel adds rooftops, Bradley armored vehicles and precision fire for single soldiers.

Reception

Critics found it a solid sequel, praising the extra squad options, vehicles and verticality while noting that missions grow repetitive and the difficulty runs high. PC reviewers singled out complicated controls and frequent forced replays of missions. Steam players who stick with it call it a rare and immersive tactical game that has few modern equivalents. Others complain about respawning enemies, unreliable cover and sparse save points.

  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
Online multiplayer relied on GameSpy and no longer works, leaving LAN play only (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen resolutions stretch the image and HUD unless a fan FOV fix is installed (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
The game has full Xbox controller support with remapping (PCGamingWiki).

  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions

Above 60 FPS the hit camera freezes the game when a soldier is shot, but capping the frame rate at 60 fixes it (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

1.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Each fire team is steered through layered command menus rather than direct aiming, and the PC review calls the complicated controls the game's biggest slip; players say the first sessions feel strange until the scheme clicks. Source: gamewatcher.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Widescreen resolutions stretch both the 3D image and the HUD unless a fan FOV fix is used, and there is no windowed mode. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
There is no free saving, only set save points within each mission; the PC review describes repeating missions after failures, and players complain about redoing whole sections after a sudden wipe. Source: gamewatcher.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The first mission doubles as a long tutorial, and briefing videos explain each order, splitting teams and breaching before they are needed. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Enemies keep emerging from huts in areas already cleared until the huts are destroyed, and PC critics at IGN and GameSpot found the game advances little once its new tools are introduced. Source: steamcommunity.com, metacritic.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
On widescreen displays the view is stretched unless a fan FOV fix is installed, and above 60 FPS the hit camera that shows a wounded soldier freezes the game. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
