How to get Gothic II: Gold Edition running today
- Install the fan patch Union (SystemPack 2.0), which fixes low frame rates and a visible window border in fullscreen on Windows 8 and later and adds proper widescreen support; it is available through the Steam Workshop, with setup steps on PCGamingWiki.
- Add GRawInput to fix the mouse with raw input support.
- If the game crashes on launch with recent Intel integrated graphics, install Gothic LegacyAltRenderer.
- If the camera spins uncontrollably, disable display scaling on high DPI settings in the executable's compatibility properties (PCGamingWiki).
Synopsis
A third-person fantasy role-playing game from the German studio Piranha Bytes, bundled here with its Night of the Raven expansion. You return as a nameless hero to an island under threat from dragons and an orc army, earn your way into the city, join one of three factions, and grow stronger by finding teachers rather than by leveling up automatically.
What people say
Critics at release praised the story, quest design, handcrafted world, music and the believable daily routines of its characters, while faulting the dated graphics, clipping, crashes and a weak English translation and voice cast. Players today still rank it among the best role-playing games ever made, citing a world that rewards exploration, quests with several solutions and real faction choices. The most common modern complaints are stiff controls and combat that take hours to learn, a harsh opening, no quest markers, bugs, and the need for fan patches to run well on current Windows.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

Design today: 3 / 5
- ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardPlayers widely describe the controls and combat as stiff and unconventional, taking hours to get used to, and controller support is unofficial and incomplete. Source: vaporlens.app, pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✗Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensMenus have no mouse cursor, only a few widescreen resolutions work natively, and proper modern resolutions need a fan patch. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressPlayers can save by hand almost anywhere and quicksave outside combat, though some wish for autosaves. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✗It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThere are no quest markers, objectives must be worked out from dialogue and the map, and many players find the opening hours hard to get into. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingPlayers mostly praise a dense world that rewards exploration, with only a few complaints about grinding or a weaker final stretch. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerThe third-person camera draws few specific complaints, apart from a spinning bug on high DPI displays that a compatibility setting fixes. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, vaporlens.app.
