Synopsis

A turn-based fantasy strategy game in which you lead heroes across an adventure map, gathering resources, capturing mines and building up towns. When armies meet, the game switches to tactical battles on a hex grid. This edition remakes the original Restoration of Erathia campaigns with sharper art, widescreen support and online play.

What people say

Critics agreed that the 1999 game is still one of the best strategy games ever made, but most were cool on this 2015 remaster, calling the visual update minimal and the content thin next to the older Complete Edition. The missing expansions, which Ubisoft said it could not add because their source code was lost, were the main complaint. Players still love the core game, though many steer newcomers to the GOG Complete Edition with fan mods. Lightly populated online lobbies and a weak in-game tutorial were other criticisms.

Design today: 4.5 / 5

  • ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardThe mouse-driven controls are simple and work well, though there is no controller support and the cursor jumping back after moves takes getting used to. Source: digitallydownloaded.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe touched-up art and widescreen support look better on modern monitors and the interface reads clearly at a glance. Source: digitallydownloaded.net.
  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressAs a turn-based game it lets you save at any time on the adventure map; evidence on this point is thin. Source: digitallydownloaded.net.
  • ✗It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe in-game tutorial offers little and the real guide is a separate PDF, so it takes a while to understand how to play. Source: gamequarter.be.
  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingTurns are slow by design but rarely feel like filler, and scenarios set their own length; some players report slow turns, and evidence is thin. Source: digitallydownloaded.net.
  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerThe top-down adventure map and fixed battle screen leave nothing for the camera to get wrong. Source: digitallydownloaded.net.
