Synopsis

A third-person stealth game in which Agent 47 turns on his agency to protect a young girl and is hunted across Chicago and rural South Dakota. Missions are a string of smaller story-driven stages where he sneaks through cover, takes enemy disguises, hides bodies and picks between quiet kills and open gunfights, with an Instinct meter that reveals guard routes and helps him blend in.

What people say

Critics at release praised the looks, the tight controls and some standout set pieces, but many longtime fans felt it traded the series' open sandbox levels for linear, story-heavy stages. The disguise system, in which guards wearing the same outfit see through 47 from afar unless he spends Instinct, and sparse checkpoints that bring defeated enemies back drew heavy criticism. Players today tend to call it a solid stealth-action game but a weak Hitman game, and recommend the later World of Assassination trilogy to anyone after the sandbox formula.

  • ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardA 2024 retrospective calls the controls extremely tight, and the game supports controllers as well as mouse and keyboard. Source: inverse.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensRuns at modern resolutions with no known interface problems listed; evidence on this point is thin. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • ✗Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThere are no free saves, checkpoints are rare and turned off on harder difficulties, and reloading one brings knocked-out guards back, a widely shared complaint. Source: spacebiff.com.
  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe opening mission works as a tutorial and the linear stages, with Instinct showing guard paths, need less trial and error than other Hitman games. Source: inverse.com.
  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe roughly 10-hour campaign is described as tense and full of set pieces, though some critics found its long cutscenes and errand-like stages slow. Source: inverse.com, spacebiff.com.
  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerThe over-the-shoulder camera and cover system work smoothly, and no camera complaints turned up. Source: inverse.com.
