How to get Metro 2033 Redux running today
What you need
- Optional Metro Mouse FixGives raw mouse input with the same sensitivity in all directions. A single dinput8.dll, no mod manager needed.
- Optional Notepad (built into Windows)Edits user.cfg for the mouse, field of view and other tweaks.
Steps
Open a step for the full walkthrough.
-
Fix the uneven horizontal and vertical mouse sensitivity with the Metro Mouse Fix, or by editing user.cfg (PCGamingWiki).
- Mouse Fix route: in Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files, extract dinput8.dll into that folder, and start the game as usual.
- To remove the Mouse Fix, delete or rename dinput8.dll.
- user.cfg route: close the game and open your Steam folder, then userdata, the folder with your user number, 286690, remote. Open user.cfg in Notepad.
- Set aim_assist to 0, mouse_curve_coef to 0, mouse_curve_num to 0 and sens_border to 2, then save.
- PCGamingWiki notes the user.cfg route might not work for everyone.
-
Widen the field of view by editing r_base_fov in user.cfg (PCGamingWiki).
- Open user.cfg as in the step above.
- Find r_base_fov and change its value.
- The game uses vertical FOV. PCGamingWiki suggests 58.71550751, which equals 90 horizontal FOV at 1920×1080.
- Save the file and start the game.
-
Turn off in-game vsync on high refresh rate monitors, since it caps the game at 60 Hz (PCGamingWiki).
- Open the game's video options and turn off Vsync.
- If you want vsync, force it in your graphics driver instead, as PCGamingWiki suggests.
Synopsis
A linear first-person shooter set in the tunnels under a ruined Moscow, where survivors of a nuclear war live in metro stations. As a young man named Artyom, you travel from station to station, scavenging ammunition, managing gas mask filters on the surface, and choosing between fighting and sneaking past mutants and human factions.
What people say
The 2010 original earned favorable reviews for its oppressive atmosphere, story and set pieces, but critics faulted its bugs, weak AI, loose aiming and unreliable stealth. The 2014 Redux was received more warmly, with reviewers calling it a smoother and better-looking way to play. Players today still praise the atmosphere, sound and visuals, which hold up well. Common complaints are erratic enemy AI, inconsistent stealth, gunplay that feels light, very linear levels, and a narrow field of view with no in-game slider.

Design today
3.5 / 5✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Mouse sensitivity differs between horizontal and vertical movement out of the box, and players often call the combat janky and the gunplay weightless. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, vaporlens.app.
✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The HUD is minimal. Ammo is read from the weapon, objectives from Artyom's journal and filter time from his watch. It runs at 4K, but ultrawide is stretched in fullscreen and needs windowed mode or a fix. Source: en.wikipedia.org, pcgamingwiki.com.
✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
The game saves automatically at checkpoints and has no manual save or quicksave, and the linear levels keep deaths from costing much progress. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Some players mention weak guidance, but it is a minor complaint and the linear levels keep the path forward clear. Source: vaporlens.app.
✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
The campaign is short and linear with no grind or backtracking, and critics praised its varied set pieces. Source: en.wikipedia.org, vaporlens.app.
✗Camera or movement fights the player
The field of view is narrow and has no in-game slider, a widely shared complaint that takes a config edit to change. Source: vaporlens.app, pcgamingwiki.com.
