Synopsis
An open-world action game set in Mordor between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. You play Talion, a ranger bound to an elven wraith, who climbs, sneaks and fights through orc-held lands while the Nemesis system gives individual orc captains names, memories and grudges as they rise through Sauron's army.
What people say
Critics rated it highly, singling out the Nemesis system as a genuinely new idea and praising the fluid, Arkham-style combat, while noting a thin story and borrowed mechanics. Players today still treat the Nemesis system as its lasting draw, and many say no game since has matched it. Common criticisms are repetitive missions and encounters that wear thin in the second half, a forgettable story and lead, and combat some find shallow.

Design today
4.5 / 5✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The Arkham-style combat feels fast and forgiving on controller or keyboard, though some players find it shallow. Source: thesixthaxis.com, steamcommunity.com.
✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The interface and Nemesis screens are clear at modern resolutions and draw no complaints, though one player notes enemy power is hard to read. Source: steamcommunity.com.
✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Frequent autosaves mean little is lost, and death itself feeds the Nemesis system rather than costing progress. Source: opencritic.com.
✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The opening missions introduce combat, stealth and the Nemesis hierarchy step by step, and no source mentions needing a guide. Source: opencritic.com.
✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Players and critics find missions and encounters repetitive, with the game losing steam well before the end. Source: steamcommunity.com, thesixthaxis.com.
✓Camera and movement never fight the player
The third-person camera follows climbing, stealth and combat without drawing complaints in recent player reviews. Source: steamcommunity.com, en.wikipedia.org.
