How to get Nancy Drew: Danger on Deception Island running today
- If the game will not start or shows only a small box in the top-left corner, lower the Windows desktop resolution (1360×768 works for some players) before launching it (Steam Community).
- If it still crashes with a fastbltnotrans error when the mouse reaches the screen edge, set the game executable to Windows XP SP3 compatibility with reduced color mode and 640×480 in its Properties (Steam Community).
- If the game will not save or launch and your Documents folder is synced by OneDrive, move Documents back to its local default location (Steam Community).
- As an alternative, ScummVM development builds rate this game's support as Good and can run the Steam files (ScummVM).
Synopsis
The ninth Nancy Drew adventure is a first-person point-and-click mystery set on a foggy island off the coast of Washington state. A planned whale-watching vacation turns into an investigation of a sabotaged boat, a string of burglaries and an old smuggling legend, which you solve by questioning suspects, solving puzzles and getting around on foot, by bike and by kayak.

Reception
Critics at release counted it among the best entries in the series, with a Metacritic score of 81 and GameBoomers praising its varied puzzles, many locations and nautical atmosphere. Players on Steam still rate it highly and often name it a favorite for its setting, characters and puzzle mix. The most common complaints are the confusing kayak navigation, a fair amount of backtracking and the dated still-frame movement. Some players also hit display problems on modern high-resolution screens.

Design today
4.5/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardEverything is done with the mouse through a smart cursor that changes over hotspots, with no reflex demands outside one optional arcade minigame. Source: gameboomers.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThe game runs only at 640×480 in 4:3 with no widescreen option, and on high-resolution displays it can open as a small box in the corner of the screen. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressSaves can be made at any time, and the Second Chance option returns Nancy to just before a fatal mistake. Source: gameboomers.com, steamcommunity.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressFriends reachable by phone give in-game hints, and the one arcade puzzle counts as won after several failed tries. Source: gameboomers.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingA map lets Nancy bike between island locations in one step, and there are no timed puzzles, though some players note a fair amount of backtracking. Source: gameboomers.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Camera and movement never fight the playerMovement is node-based first-person clicking between still views, so there is no free camera to fight, though the kayak sections are easy to get lost in. Source: gameboomers.com, steamcommunity.com.
