Synopsis

A first-person point-and-click mystery set on Hawaii's Big Island, where Nancy Drew looks into the sabotage of an entomologist's research camp. Play alternates between Nancy and the Hardy Boys, who work a separate thread of the case, with insect science, fishing, necklace crafting and logic puzzles along the way.

Reception

Critics at release found it a middling series entry: reviewers liked the Hawaiian setting, the science theme and the puzzle variety, but called it short, formulaic and plain-looking next to other adventures. Steam players today rate it Mostly Positive, praising the Hardy Boys switching and the relaxed mood. Common complaints are a thin mystery whose motives are only explained in a closing info dump, dull chore-like tasks such as gathering insect samples, and a story that can be finished in about five hours.

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Everything is done with the mouse in a standard point-and-click interface, with a simple, customizable inventory. There is no controller support. Source: gameboomers.com, gamesfirst.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Conversations cannot be clicked through, puzzle instructions are easy to miss, and some players on current systems report the picture filling only part of the screen. Source: gameboomers.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Players can save at any time into 35 slots, and the Second Chance option restarts a failed timed or deadly moment right before it went wrong. Source: gameboomers.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Junior difficulty adds a notebook to-do list and phone hints, and the case is considered one of the easiest in the series. Source: gameboomers.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Progress hinges on chores such as collecting insect samples and earning in-game money, sorting puzzles restart after one mistake, and the mystery is only resolved in a long closing explanation. Source: steamcommunity.com, gameboomers.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Movement is node-based and often only allows stepping forward or turning around, which makes the small locations feel cramped. Source: gameboomers.com.
