Synopsis
Neverwinter Nights is a BioWare role-playing game built on the third edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, where one custom hero and a henchman fight through a plague-struck city and beyond. The Enhanced Edition bundles the original campaign, the Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark expansions, premium modules, and the toolset for building adventures. Campaigns can be played solo or in online co-op, and player-run persistent worlds are still active.
Reception
The 2002 original became known as much for its toolset and multiplayer as for its campaigns. The Enhanced Edition drew mixed reviews, mostly for its console versions, which critics found clumsy with a controller and dated in look. On Steam, players still recommend it for the expansions, the huge library of community modules and long-running persistent worlds. Many players call the original campaign the weakest part, generic and too long next to Hordes of the Underdark.

Design today
3.5/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardOn PC the hero moves and attacks with mouse clicks, with quickbars on the keyboard and a radial menu for every other action. PCGamingWiki lists no controller support on PC, but mouse and keyboard play needs no setup. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe Enhanced Edition supports widescreen, ultrawide and 4K, and the UI scale option enlarges menus and text on high resolutions. The radial menus and fixed UI layout still feel dated. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressSingle player allows named saves at any time plus a one-key quicksave next to autosaves, and in the official campaigns death offers a respawn that costs some experience and gold instead of forcing a reload. Source: nwn.fandom.com, nwn.fandom.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guideThe game expects players to know the third edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and a poorly built character can struggle for the whole campaign. The opening floods new players with information and pop-up tutorials. Source: cubed3.com, waytoomany.games.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingPlayers widely call the original campaign generic and say it overstays its welcome, and some call it the worst of the three. The usual advice is to move on to Hordes of the Underdark and community modules. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, cubed3.com.
- Camera and movement never fight the playerThe PC version keeps both the third-person camera and the isometric view, which the console ports dropped, and players rate its camera above the sequel's. Source: steamcommunity.com, waytoomany.games.
