How to get RAGE running today

What you need

  • Not needed Extra tools or mod managerEvery fix here uses Steam's own launch choices, launch options and one new folder; no mod manager or third-party tool is needed.

Steps

Open a step for the full walkthrough.

  1. Choose the 64-bit version when Steam asks how to launch the game; it fixes missing mouse control but disables achievements and multiplayer (PCGamingWiki).
    1. In Steam, click Play on RAGE. A window asks which version to launch.
    2. Pick the 64-bit option, the one described as the version with mods support.
    3. Check that the mouse moves the camera and works in the menus.
    4. Know the trade-off: the 64-bit version disables achievements and multiplayer. Choose the 32-bit option instead when you need those.
    5. The 64-bit version keeps its saves in a different place, in the SAVES\base\savegame folder inside the game folder. To carry a game over, copy the file GAMES-AUTOSAVE from one version's save folder to the other's and load that autosave.
  2. If textures blur and pop in or the game stutters, create the texture cache folder and, with 3 GB of video memory or more, add the larger texture buffer launch options (PCGamingWiki).
    1. Press Windows+R, type %LOCALAPPDATA% and press Enter.
    2. If there is no folder named id Software, create it: right-click > New > Folder, and name it id Software.
    3. Open id Software and create a folder named Rage inside it. The game now keeps its texture cache there between sessions. Note that one cache file is about 1 GB and stays there after uninstalling.
    4. If the graphics card has at least 3 GB of video memory, in Steam right-click RAGE > Properties > General and paste this into Launch Options: +fc maxcachememoryMB 1024 +vt_maxPPF "16" +vt_pageimagesizevmtr 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUnique 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly 16384 +vt_pageImageSizeUniqueDiffuseOnly2 16384
    5. Start the game and turn quickly on the spot. Textures should stay sharp instead of loading in late.
  3. If the game freezes for a second or two at regular intervals, add +jobs_numThreads 0 to the Steam launch options (PCGamingWiki).
    1. In Steam, right-click RAGE > Properties > General.
    2. In Launch Options, type +jobs_numThreads 0. If other options are already there, add it at the end, separated by a space.
    3. Close the window and start the game.
    4. Play for a few minutes and check that the short regular freezes are gone. If nothing changes, remove the option again.

Synopsis

A first-person shooter from id Software set on an Earth wrecked by an asteroid, where a survivor wakes from a cryogenic shelter decades later. Between gunfights in bandit hideouts and ruined cities, the player drives armed buggies across a wasteland, races for prizes and takes jobs from frontier towns.

What people say

Critics at release praised the striking id Tech 5 visuals, the weighty gunplay and well-animated enemies, but found the open wasteland thin, the side jobs repetitive and the ending abrupt. The PC launch was rough, with texture pop-in, driver crashes and console-style menus drawing heavy complaints. Players who pick it up today often call it an underrated corridor shooter, while still naming the empty open world and the sudden ending as its weak points.

Design today

  • ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard

Shooting is tight and precise, and the game has full controller support and per-axis mouse sensitivity. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✗Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens

The PC version keeps console-style menus with a slow menu cursor that needs a config tweak, and the page offers no UI scaling option. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress

There are 14 manual save slots plus an autosave, so little progress is lost. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress

The opening hour introduces driving, shooting and the town hub efficiently, and no source reports needing a guide. Source: en.wikipedia.org).

  • ✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking

The overworld between hubs is thin, driving is largely an optional diversion, and the story and final boss end abruptly. Source: en.wikipedia.org).

  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the player

Movement and aiming feel like a classic id shooter with an adjustable field of view, and the known complaint is texture pop-in, not camera behavior. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
