Synopsis

Sam & Max Save the World is a comedy point-and-click adventure starring a dog detective and his unhinged rabbit partner, the Freelance Police. Across six short episodes they chase a string of hypnosis plots, talking to oddball characters, collecting items and solving puzzles. The 2020 remaster by Skunkape Games bundles all six episodes with updated visuals and audio.

Reception

The original Telltale episodes were praised for their humor and bite-sized structure, and the remaster holds a Top Critic Average of 82 on OpenCritic. Reviewers liked the cleaner widescreen visuals, clearer audio and improved stability, while noting the update is faithful rather than ambitious. Some critics and players pointed out that playing the episodes back to back exposes reused locations and characters. Steam players rate it Very Positive, though early reviews objected to rewritten jokes and a recast voice for one character.

  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
Some jokes were rewritten and one character recast, but the original 2006 episodes ship as free DLC, so nothing is lost (PCGamingWiki).

Widescreen and 4K are supported natively; ultrawide is pillarboxed without a patch (PCGamingWiki).

Full controller support is included, though keys and buttons cannot be remapped (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The game uses a simple point-and-click interface and has full controller support with hotplugging, though keys cannot be remapped. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamecritics.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The remaster renders natively in widescreen and 4K, and subtitles cover all dialogue with an optional background for readability. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamecritics.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
The developer confirms that F5 saves the game at any point, and a chapter select on the main menu lets players restart any section of an episode. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Puzzles are small in scope with straightforward goals and a limited set of items, and the overall difficulty is low enough to suit newcomers to the genre. Source: gamecritics.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Each episode returns to the same street, shops and recurring characters, which grows repetitive when the six episodes are played back to back. Source: gamecritics.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
As a classic point-and-click adventure, players move Sam by clicking within each scene and never steer a camera. Source: gamecritics.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
