Synopsis

Secret Files: Tunguska is a third-person point-and-click adventure in which Nina Kalenkov searches for her missing father, a scientist linked to the 1908 Tunguska event. With her colleague Max, she travels from Berlin to Russia, Cuba and beyond, gathering items, combining them and talking to suspects. Players can switch between the two leads to tackle puzzles from different angles.

Reception

Critics at release praised its detailed backgrounds, long running time and easy interface, especially the button that reveals every hotspot on screen. Many found the writing and voice acting weak, with mismatched accents, and called several inventory puzzles arbitrary. Players today still recommend it as a charming, long classic adventure. Common complaints now are a few illogical puzzles that send people to walkthroughs, some pixel hunting, and stiff dialogue.

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The game is fully mouse driven, with right click to examine and left click to use, plus double clicks on exits to leave a screen quickly and Escape to skip dialogue. Source: metzomagic.com, ataniel.org.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The game runs at 1024×768 in 4:3 and only windowboxes on wider screens, and subtitle text looks low resolution at 4K. Recent players also report the arrow for backing out of close-up puzzle views sometimes not appearing. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
There are no timed sequences, fights or stealth sections, so a wrong move never costs progress; how many save slots the game offers was not confirmed. Source: metzomagic.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Several inventory puzzles follow illogical solutions, and recent players say a few are nearly impossible without online hints, even with the hotspot key and journal hints. Source: ataniel.org, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Scenes cut directly between locations without slow walking or filler animations, and the story moves briskly over more than 25 hours, though some exposition cutscenes run long. Source: ataniel.org, uhs-hints.com, metzomagic.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Each scene is a fixed illustrated view, and the game cuts cleanly between scenes rather than panning, so movement never gets in the way. Source: uhs-hints.com.
