Synopsis
A turn-based role-playing game set in a 2054 Seattle where cyberpunk technology and magic exist side by side. A hired runner investigates the murder of an old partner, building a character from mages, deckers and street samurai and fighting with a small team in tactical battles.
What people say
Critics welcomed the return of the tabletop setting, praising the sharp writing, the tactical combat in the vein of XCOM and the included level editor. Their main complaints were a short, linear campaign and, at launch, a save system limited to automatic checkpoints. Players today still enjoy the world and dialogue but often call it brief and simple, with choices that matter little, and many point to the follow-up Dragonfall as the stronger campaign.

Design today
5 / 5✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Click-to-move and click-to-target controls suit mouse play and the turn-based combat needs no fast input, though a misplaced click can occasionally waste an action point. Source: shacknews.com, rpgfan.com, avclub.com.
✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
Movement ranges, cover and action point costs are shown directly on the isometric map, and reviewers found the interface intuitive for planning tactics. Source: shacknews.com, avclub.com.
✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
The launch version saved only between scenes, which reviewers criticized, but the version 1.2 update in February 2014 added saving at any time to the original Dead Man's Switch campaign. Source: rpgcodex.net, gameinformer.com, rpgfan.com.
✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The opening fight explains combat and skill progression in text panels and objectives are logged, though one review found the lessons front-loaded and missing how karma is spent. Source: gamesbeat.com.
✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Missions are short and linear scenes with a hub between them, so there is little grind or backtracking, though some reviewers found the campaign too much on rails. Source: gamewatcher.com, rpgfan.com, shacknews.com.
✓Camera and movement never fight the player
The isometric camera follows the party at a fixed angle, and while it cannot be rotated, reviewers called that a minor annoyance rather than a real obstacle. Source: rpgfan.com, avclub.com.
