How to get Sonic Adventure 2 running today

  1. Launch with the -q command line argument to skip the launcher once settings are saved.
  2. If the game crashes after the Sonic Team logo, try DXVK, or on NVIDIA with G-SYNC set the game to Fixed Refresh in the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  3. If it crashes only in fullscreen, run it in borderless windowed mode, for example through SA Mod Manager, and turn off frame rate limiters and overlays.

Synopsis

A 3D platformer that splits into a hero story and a dark story, following Sonic and his friends on one side and Shadow, Eggman and Rouge on the other. Stages alternate between high-speed running, mech shooting levels and open treasure hunts, and a side mode lets you raise small creatures called Chao.

What people say

The 2001 Dreamcast original was highly praised, but the later GameCube version and the 2012 HD re-release drew far more mixed reviews. Critics of the HD version still enjoyed the fast Sonic and Shadow stages and the two-sided story, while calling the camera a major problem and the treasure hunts tedious. Recent Steam players mostly remember it fondly as a childhood classic and report that it runs fine, with a few calling it overrated.

Design today: 1 / 5

  • ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardPlayers rate the controls janky and imprecise (one of the most common complaints), and controller support is poor, with player slots that often need manual setup. Source: vaporlens.app, steamcommunity.com.
  • ✗Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensA separate launcher must be configured before play, controller slots and key bindings are poorly explained, and the lack of separate volume sliders lets music drown out speech. Source: vaporlens.app, gamingnexus.com.
  • ✗Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressSaving happens between stages, and the lives and in-stage checkpoint system is outdated, so failures can cost a lot of replaying. Source: gamesbeat.com.
  • ✗It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressTreasure hunt hints are vague, and players ask for a better tutorial and lean on walkthroughs. Source: vaporlens.app, gamesbeat.com.
  • ✗Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingSlow treasure hunts with randomized targets and middling mech stages break up the fast levels, and critics find them tedious. Source: gamesbeat.com, gamingnexus.com.
  • ✗Camera and movement never fight the playerThe camera turns slowly, snaps back and cannot look up or down, and camera problems are a common complaint (23 mentions in a Steam review summary). Source: vaporlens.app, gamesbeat.com.
