How to get Hitman 2: Silent Assassin running today

  1. Install Mulderland's Enhancement Pack, which downgrades the game to version 1.01 and bundles the widescreen fix, dgVoodoo 2, a 60 FPS cap and controller support (PCGamingWiki).
  2. If installing the pieces by hand, cap the frame rate at 60 FPS, since higher frame rates break cutscenes and stop the trucks in the Hidden Valley mission (PCGamingWiki).
  3. If the game crashes to desktop at launch, reset the settings in the game's configuration tool (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin is a stealth action game in which Agent 47, a retired contract killer, returns to work after his only friend is kidnapped. Each mission drops you into a large level in places such as Sicily, Russia, Japan and India, where you study guard routes, steal disguises and choose how to reach and eliminate your targets.

Reception

Critics praised it at release, with a PC Metascore of 87, for its freedom of approach, atmosphere and big improvements over the first game, while some found the controls jumpy and the AI and physics uneven. Later reviews still call it the point where the series took shape but warn that its punishing trial and error, finicky detection and bugs can put off newcomers. On Steam it holds a Very Positive rating from about 4,200 reviews, and limited saves remain a frequent complaint among players.

  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The Steam release ships version 1.02, which altered the Gurdwara missions; restoring them needs a fan downgrade (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen needs a fan-made fix (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
Controller support only comes through fan patches (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Crashes, cutscene black screens and the stuck Hidden Valley trucks all have listed fixes, mainly a 60 FPS cap (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The keyboard and mouse controls are jumpy and complex enough to take time to tame, and controller support needs a fan pack. Source: techcentral.ie, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Widescreen needs a fan fix, and the interface elements shrink to a tiny size at high resolutions unless the game is rendered at a lower resolution and upscaled. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
Saves are capped per mission by difficulty, with seven on Normal and none on Professional, so a mistake can cost a long stretch of a mission. Source: gamingpastime.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The map screen shows NPC positions, patrol movements and points of interest, giving enough information to plan each hit without a guide. Source: gamingpastime.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
The missions are large but focused sandboxes with several routes to each target, and the campaign moves through varied locations without filler. Source: gamingpastime.com, metacritic.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Players can switch between the default third-person view and an optional first-person view; the field of view is fixed unless the fan widescreen fix is installed. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
