How to get Hitman: Contracts running today

  1. Set HitmanContracts.exe to run in compatibility mode for Windows 8 (or Windows 7) if the game crashes at launch (Steam Community).
  2. Cap the frame rate at 60 fps or set the display to 60 Hz, because higher frame rates slow the game down until Agent 47 cannot move (PCGamingWiki).
  3. Install the PCGamingWiki widescreen fix for a correct Hor+ image instead of the stretched picture of the Steam version (PCGamingWiki).
  4. Add the line UseDirectInputMouse 1 to HitmanContracts.ini to smooth out jerky mouse movement (PCGamingWiki).
  5. If the game does not save, create a folder named Save inside the game folder (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

A stealth action game in which Agent 47, badly wounded in a Paris hotel room, relives earlier contracts in feverish flashbacks. Each mission drops you into an open level with one or more targets, and you choose how to reach them through disguises, poison, accidents, quiet kills or open gunfire. Several missions are reworked versions of levels from the first Hitman.

Reception

Critics at release praised the dark atmosphere, the open mission design and Jesper Kyd's score, while noting the thin story, the dim enemy AI and that many levels were remakes from Codename 47. Steam player reviews are very positive today. Common complaints are its short length and the effort needed to get it running well on a modern PC, where high frame rates can freeze 47 in place.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game is single-player and nothing has been removed from the current release (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
The Steam version offers widescreen resolutions but stretches the image with Vert- scaling; a fan fix is needed for correct Hor+ (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
Controller support needs a fan fix, and there is no controller remapping (PCGamingWiki).
  • Not Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • Known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Many players report crashes at launch on Windows 10 and 11 and the game stalling at high frame rates, fixed only with compatibility mode and a frame cap (Steam Community).

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Mouse and keyboard controls are fully remappable with adjustable mouse sensitivity and Y-axis inversion. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The Steam version stretches the image on widescreen displays, and interface elements become very small at high resolutions unless a fan fix and a forced lower resolution are used. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Below Professional, missions allow a limited number of manual saves that count down with each use, which HonestGamers found ample; Professional removes in-mission saves entirely. Source: honestgamers.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A separate Training level teaches the basics, and each mission opens with a briefing on the target and the area. Source: steamcommunity.com, gamerevolution.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Every mission is an open-ended hit on one or more targets, and the campaign takes about 10 hours on Normal. Source: gamerevolution.com, honestgamers.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Out of the box on a modern PC, mouse look is jerky and frame rates above 60 slow the game until 47 and the camera barely move, and both need config edits to fix. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
