How to get Hitman: Codename 47 running today

  1. Install the Speed/Timing Fix to stop the game running too fast and to fix floating guns at high frame rates (PCGamingWiki).
  2. Install Mulderland's Enhancement Pack, or AlphaYellow's Widescreen and FOV Fix, for correct widescreen, HUD scaling and intro skipping (PCGamingWiki).
  3. If the frame rate is low or the HUD is too small, use dgVoodoo 2 with MSAA left on App driven or Off (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

Hitman: Codename 47 is a third-person stealth game and the first in the Hitman series. Players control Agent 47, a cloned assassin who takes contracts in Hong Kong, Colombia, Budapest, Rotterdam and Romania. Each mission is an open level where disguises, timing and observation open different ways to reach the target.

Reception

Critics at release praised its open, puzzle-like levels and its fresh take on stealth, but faulted its harsh difficulty, awkward controls and technical problems. Recent retrospectives agree that the core idea still shows through. They also describe a game with no saving inside missions, thin briefings, a hard-to-read map and a weak run of jungle missions in Colombia. Players on Steam still trade tips on controls, the inventory and display problems at high resolutions.

Runs today

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game has no online features, and no levels, music or modes have been removed (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen needs a fan fix, and the stock game crops the picture with a Vert- view (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
The game has no controller support (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists speed, frame rate and display problems but no open crash or progress blocker, and each listed issue has a fix (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

1/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Aiming and movement work like a shooter of the time, but the default layout uses WZXC instead of WASD, not every action can be rebound, and using items and objects through a right-click menu was called unwieldy at release and clunky today. Source: edition.cnn.com, ashadler.com, gamingpastime.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The HUD does not scale and can vanish or become unreadable at high resolutions, and the map leaves out guards and sometimes shows 47 in the wrong place. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, ashadler.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
There is no way to save inside a mission, which is long and often needs several attempts; progress is kept only between missions. Dying can respawn 47 nearby for a fee, but the level keeps its alert state, so a clean retry means starting the mission over. Source: quartertothree.com, edition.cnn.com, ashadler.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
The training level explains very little, and briefings often leave out the information needed to find targets and exits. Source: ashadler.com, gamingpastime.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
The three Colombia jungle missions are widely disliked, and later levels such as Plutonium Runs Loose involve long waits and unclear progress. Source: ashadler.com, gamingpastime.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Physics and camera sway are tied to frame rate, so on modern hardware the camera wobbles far faster than intended without a fan fix. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, ashadler.com.
