Synopsis
A story-driven action role-playing game in which the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia is framed for the murder of a king and sets out to clear his name. You fight with swords, magic signs and bombs, make choices that split the story into very different paths, and brew potions before battle. The Enhanced Edition adds extra quests, cutscenes and an optional tutorial.
What people say
Critics at release praised the mature writing, branching story and striking visuals, while many found the early combat punishing and poorly explained. Players today still rate the story and choices highly, and some prefer its darker tone to The Witcher 3. Common criticism points at clumsy targeting, a heavy reliance on rolling, limited exploration and a short final act. On Steam it is rated very positive.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

Design today: 3 / 5
- ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardCombat targeting can lock onto a distant enemy instead of the one in front of you, and players find the fighting overly reliant on rolling. Source: gamedeveloper.com, steamcommunity.com.
- ✗Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensIt supports modern resolutions, but the inventory lacks sorting and the alchemy and quick menus hide item counts. Source: gamedeveloper.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressYou can save freely outside combat; evidence on this point is thin, as players rarely complain about it. Source: steamcommunity.com.
- ✗It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe opening throws groups of enemies at you before explaining how to fight them, and key mechanics were left out of the tutorial. Source: gamedeveloper.com.
- ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe chapters are focused on story with little filler or grind, though the early difficulty spike and limited exploration slow some players. Source: steamcommunity.com, gamedeveloper.com.
- ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerThe third-person camera is serviceable outside combat targeting problems; evidence on this point is thin. Source: gamedeveloper.com.
