How to get L.A. Noire running today

  1. Install V-Patch to unlock the 30 fps cap with fewer physics bugs, remove black bars at any aspect ratio and set a custom field of view.
  2. If the map markers are hard to see or the interface is tiny at high resolutions, see the workarounds on PCGamingWiki.
  3. Expect the Rockstar Games Launcher to start with the game; if it fails to launch, running it as administrator is a common workaround reported by players (VaporLens).

Synopsis

A detective game from Team Bondi and Rockstar set in 1947 Los Angeles, following officer Cole Phelps as he rises through the traffic, homicide, vice and arson desks. Each case means searching crime scenes for clues, questioning witnesses and suspects while reading their motion-captured faces for lies, and now and then chasing or shooting it out with criminals across an open recreation of the city.

What people say

Critics at release praised the period setting, the noir story and the groundbreaking facial capture, but many found the interrogations confusing and closer to guesswork than deduction, and some called the late cases tedious. Players today still admire the atmosphere and the interrogation idea, while widely complaining about a weak PC port with a 30 fps cap, crashes and a forced Rockstar launcher. Slippery driving, a formulaic case structure and the lack of mid-case saves are other common gripes.

  • ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardPlayers call the keyboard controls cumbersome and movement stiff, with driving especially slippery, and many recommend a gamepad. Source: vaporlens.app.
  • ✗Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe map and other interface elements do not scale at high resolutions, leaving map markers very hard to see. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • ✗Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThere is no manual or mid-case saving, and a botched interrogation can only be redone by replaying the whole case, a major complaint among players. Source: vaporlens.app, escapistmagazine.com.
  • ✗It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressCritics and players find the interrogation rules unclear, with vague evidence requirements that turn accusations into guesswork. Source: escapistmagazine.com, vaporlens.app.
  • ✗Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe case structure grows formulaic and many players find the mid-to-late game a slog, with the arson cases singled out as tedious. Source: vaporlens.app, escapistmagazine.com.
  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerSome players describe the camera as stiff, but camera complaints are minor next to other issues. Source: vaporlens.app.
