Synopsis

A first-person, grid-based dungeon crawler from Almost Human, modeled on classics like Eye of the Beholder and Dungeon Master. Players guide a party of four prisoners down through the levels of a mountain prison, fighting monsters in real time, finding secrets and solving trap and switch puzzles.

What people say

Critics in 2012 welcomed it as a faithful, atmospheric revival of old-school dungeon crawlers, praising its level design, puzzles and enemy placement, with only a few traps called more unfair than clever. Players today still recommend it for its atmosphere and secrets and its blend of puzzles and combat. Common complaints are clunky combat that pulls attention to the interface, no controller support and a weak final boss and ending.

Design today: 4.5 / 5

  • ✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardThe Steam version lists no controller support, attacks are clicks on weapon icons and every spell means re-entering runes on a grid, which reviewers found tedious in real-time fights, and stray clicks or keys can set off traps. Source: store.steampowered.com, rpgcodex.net.
  • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensParty portraits, inventory and an automap sit in clear panels that reviewers found easy to use, so the interface reads well on today's screens; evidence on high-resolution scaling is thin. Source: destructoid.com, rpgcodex.net.
  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressYou can save anywhere and quick-load at a key press, so a party wipe only sends you back to your last save; blue crystals heal and revive the party but are not needed for saving. Source: rpgcodex.net, destructoid.com.
  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressPuzzles come with nearby clues and reviewers call them tricky but fair, though spell runes are explained only by the manual or scrolls found in the dungeon, and a few trap rooms are nearly impossible to survive the first time. Source: destructoid.com, scientificgamer.com.
  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe 13 levels change setting at well-timed points and the roughly eleven-hour run never runs out of ideas, with puzzles breaking up fights; reviewers only note that combat grows repetitive. Source: scientificgamer.com, destructoid.com.
  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerMovement steps from tile to tile and turns in quarter steps, which reviewers say feels strict for about an hour and then natural, and the fixed view never drifts; the grid can feel slow in a few urgent moments.
